Philippians 1:27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.
A God-given vision of being God-seekers, building lives, every day, everywhere and everyone, is meant to be realised both corporately and individually. In order to come to this successfully, it requires our commitment not just to the vision per se, but to one another!
Let’s put it this way: we need to throw out the lone-ranger, Americanised version of the one-man standing, spiritual hero cowboy who overcomes the odds all by himself, and is able to single-handedly defeat enemies – the image of a lean, mean, preaching machine. Even the apostle Paul debunked this form of thinking by asking the church at Philippi to “stand firm in one spirit” and “with one mind, strive side by side”.
When we have in our spiritual DNA a collective, communal sense of belonging and advancement of the gospel, it spurs us to inspire one another to live lives that fulfill His call and also to bear each other up. There is no secret formula to church growth, only what has been written in Scripture: that we are to “stand firm in one spirit” and “with one mind, strive side by side for the faith of the gospel”.
