“And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see…” 1 Sam 3:1-2
It is no coincidence that the Hebraic writing mentions about no frequent “vision” along with Eli’s failing eyesight. In fact the word for “grow dim” was the same word employed across many instances for “darkness”.
It was a very sad state for the nation of Israel – its spiritual leadership had gone dark. Eli’s perverse and evil sons were later judged by God. Eli fell off his seat and because he was both fat and old, the fall was fatal for him.
In the midst of it all, God was already working through Samuel. He called this young lad and brought him into being through his barren mother. This young man would become the prophetic voice of a nation that had idolatry, sinfulness and an impending judgment awaiting it. Samuel was not perfect, but he fulfilled the call for his life.
When it comes to destiny and calling especially in the midst of darkness, we can end up losing focus because we allow ourselves to be sidetracked. Samuel could have thrown in the towel when he saw what happened to Eli, the very man who mentored him. But he kept his focus and eventually, breakthrough came. When we are faced with darkness and situationally impossible fronts, we need to revisit our purpose and have a certainty of where He is leading. If He has already spoken, He is obliged to bring breakthrough. Have faith and take heart in the process of molding – breakthrough is coming.
