The
First Assembly of God Mission graced the Island of Singapore in 1928 through divine
circumstances . One of the pioneer of the Assemblies of God Mission in Singapore
was Rev. Cecil M Jackson who entered into eternal rest in 1985, he was 87 then.
In reminiscence , this is the humble story of Calvary Assembly of God.
In January 1958 , seven Pentecostal churches and one independent flock jointly
sponsored a salvation healing crusade with Evangelist AC Valdez which was held
at the 'old 'Badminton hall at Guillemard Road for three weeks.
Immediately
following this , visitation and follow-up began. Bethel Church was awarded all
the enquires-decision cards of persons in Kallang, Tanjong Katong, Mountbatten
and Geylang Lor 1-33,under the pastorship of Rev Fred and Margaret Seaward.
In
December 1958 the Seawards left for the United States on furlough and Bro. C D Thomas
( A/G S. India ) assumed the pastorate for the interim period. In 1959 , Rev
and Mrs. Fred Oliver Seaward returned to Singapore after a year's long furlough
and resumed the pastorate of Bethel Church. A children's meeting was then started
in the home of Bro. Jerry Ong in Fort Road. Pastor C D Thomas left to join the
faculty of the Bible Institute of Malaya ( BCM ).Rev and Mrs. Seaward full of
vigour and assisted by lay leaders and a power-packed Christ's Ambassadors Youth,
plunged into the Geylang and Tanjong Katong Areas with visitation teams during
Sunday afternoons between 2-4 pm. They would then return to Bethel Church for
the Evangelistic Service at 5.00pm
This
group of youngsters , full of vitality and zeal, included William Yuen, Annie
Ler , Jerry Ong Siong Kai, his brother Jack Ong, John Choo, "Lame"
Robert Tan and several others visited many of the enquirers and converts.
In
1960 , a shop house was rented at Dakota Crescent and Calvary Assembly , an
outstation of Bethel Church emerged. Rev. Fred Seaward preached while his wife
interpreted in Mandarin.
